New Graduate Course from HSP and Temple U: "Teaching US History with Primary Sources"

Through a new collaboration with Temple University, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania is proud to announce an online graduate course for educators beginning in 2016: Preserving American Freedom: A Primary Source Approach to Teaching American History.

Based upon HSP's digital project Preserving American Freedom, the course will move chronologically through American history from the late 1600s to the late 1900s. Each class session will consist of background about the time period by a scholar, presentation of primary sources for use in teaching the period by HSP staff, and a demonstration - also by HSP staff - of methodology for how best to use the sources to meet Common Core standards of literacy and social studies.

The 15-week online course has four required virtual meetings: 1/20/16, 2/10/16, 3/9/16, and 4/6/16 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuition for this three-credit course is $2,600.

This is a unique opportunity for participating educators to gain access to thousands of primary source documents for use in classroom lessons, as well as specific teaching strategies to help bring these sources to life for students.
